International Activities

The ADA is your window to the global dental community. The ADA recognizes that oral health is the shared concern of dentists everywhere, beyond the confines of national boundaries. In recognition of the growing global dental community, the ADA Center for International Development and Affairs (CIDA) was established in 2002. CIDA is the ADA’s international liaison in the worldwide exchange of knowledge and experience in oral health matters, improving the quality of health care worldwide, and linking dental professionals to events, organizations, professional activities and volunteer opportunities around the world.

Dental Volunteers Needed in Ghana

Individual dentists, or dental teams, are invited to serve a short or long term dental mission at the Saboba Medical Centre, Saboba Ghana, where there are no regular dental services. Ghana Saboba Medical Centre is a rural medical centre and the only medical facility for the 120,000 people of the Saboba-Cheriponi region of Ghana. A simple dental suite is operational and will be completed as funds are available. A temporary dental license is required, and processing takes 90 days on receipt of the application by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council. To request an dental application contact Marita Gladson at sabobashope@earthlink.net. Volunteers will schedule their own trip. For detailed travel information, visit www.sabobamedicalcentre.net Link opens in separate window. Pop-up Blocker may need to be disabled.. A minimum trip of 2 weeks is highly recommended and includes for 4 days of travel to Saboba, 6 days of patient care and 4 days of travel home. An additional week would allow more time to treat patients and to do some sightseeing. Accommodations are in a modest guest house. The rooms have a fan, and a bathroom. A cook is available to provide meals. Volunteers make their own arrangements and pay all their own expenses.

SURVEYS, SYMPOSIUM TARGET ORAL HEALTH LITERACY

Many dental patients do not fully comprehend their oral health status and the instructions provided to them by their dental care providers. Building on the work it accomplished toward improving oral health literacy in 2006 and 2007, the ADA will actively seek more information on oral health literacy issues when it surveys dentists, dental team members and dental schools in 2008 to help identify the problems associated with oral health literacy.
