Additional Special Pay Increases for Dental Officers

The ADA successfully lobbied for an increase in Additional Special Pay (ASP) for dental officers. The military authorization bill (NDAA 08) included a provision (Section 616) to increase dental officer’s ASP. The increase is as follows:

  • ASP increased from $4,000 to $10,000 per year for dental officers with less than three years of service.
  • ASP increased from $6,000 to $12,000 per year for dental officers with three to 10 years of service.
  • ASP will be $15,000 per year for dental officers with 10 or more years of service.

ASP is paid to all dental officers who complete a contract to remain on active duty for at least one year and meet the eligibility requirements. This amount is paid in annual installments and is taxable income.

ADA President and Other Leaders Welcome Home Wounded Troops

Roth at AndrewsDr. Kathleen Roth, ADA president, visited Andrews Air Force Base on March 2 as a guest of Air Force Brig. Gen. Gar S. Graham, assistant surgeon general for dental services. Dr Roth was part of a small civilian contingent welcoming 34 incoming patients. Joining Dr. Roth were Dr. Murray D. Sykes, ADA 4th District trustee; Dr. Daniel H. Roth, the ADA president's husband and dental practice partner; the ADA Washington Office and ADA News staff. The civilian group toured Andrews AFB medical facilities and the medical mission transporting wounded troops from combat areas to the United States for continuing care and treatment.

Dr. Roth expressed her deepest gratitude to the wounded soldiers that day. "I was humbled to be on the team to greet and thank these heroes returning to home soil that day" she said. "They wanted no recognition. A warm welcome home and thanks for serving brought smiles to their faces, all in their time of severe pain and suffering."

Science In The News: New Guidelines Released By The American Heart Association

New guidelines for the prevention of infective endocarditis were released by the American Heart Association (AHA) on April 19. The guidelines now recommend that fewer dental patients with heart disease should receive antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures to prevent the heart infection called infective endocarditis (IE). The recommendations were developed by a committee comprising national and international experts in infectious disease and cardiology, and representatives from the ADA, Infectious Diseases Society of America and American Academy of Pediatrics.

The committee was appointed by AHA to update its previous recommendations, which were published in 1997. After reviewing the relevant scientific literature from 1950 to 2006, the committee concluded that bacteremia resulting from daily activities is far more likely to cause IE than bacteremia associated with a dental procedure. The committee further concluded that antibiotic prophylaxis may not prevent infective endocarditis. Based on these new findings, the guidelines now recommend that prophylactic antibiotic therapy for dental procedures should be restricted to patients who would be at highest risk for IE, those who have artificial heart valves, a history of previous endocarditis, certain serious congenital heart conditions, and heart-transplant patients with possible heart valve concerns.

The report is available on online.
