2006 Distribution of Dentists in the United States by Region and State (September 2008)
This report presents data from a census of all known dentists in the United States and its possessions and territories. Mandated by the House of Delegates, the census has been conducted periodically since the 1950s with results reported annually. Four categories of dentists are described in the report: professionally active dentists, new professionally active dentists, active private practitioners, and new active private practitioners.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice – Periodontists in Private Practice (September 2008)
The average net income from the primary private practice of owner periodontists was $263,200 in 2005, according to this new report. The publication also indicates that the average gross billings per owner for all independent periodontists was $803,190 in 2005.
In addition to net income and gross billings information, this newly published report includes information on practice expenses, number of hours worked, time spent in the dental practice, number of patient visits, patients’ insurance coverage, gender and age distribution of patients, and employment of dental practice personnel for periodontists. Multiple-year trend charts are included for many of these statistics.

2007 Survey of Dental Graduates (September 2008)
This report is part of the Distribution of Dentists, the ADA’s census of all known dentists in the United States and its possessions and territories. The survey is mailed to dentists one year after they have graduated from dental school. Information gathered from the survey includes occupation, practice ownership, education debt balance, specialty area of practice, and race/ethnicity.

2007 Public Opinion Survey – Oral Health of the US Population (September 2008)
The results published in this report are based on telephone interviews conducted in August 2007 with a nationally representative sample of 1,008 adults. All households were located in the continental U.S. and weights were applied to the data using household income, age, race, and gender to more accurately reflect the population. Topics include visits to the dentist, sources of oral health information, and awareness of the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice – Endodontists in Private Practice (August 2008)
The average net income from the primary private practice of owner endodontists was $327,550 in 2005, according to this report, while the average gross billings per owner for all independent endodontists was $728,160. In addition to net income and gross billings information, this report includes information on practice expenses, number of hours worked, time spent in the dental practice, number of patient visits, patients’ insurance coverage, gender and age distribution of patients, and employment of dental practice personnel for endodontists. 2006 State and County Demographic Reports (August 2008)
The Survey Center has released the 2006 State and County Demographic Reports. These custom reports, available for all U.S. counties, are based on the Survey Center's Distribution of Dentists (including the Survey of Dental Graduates), a House-mandated census of dentists in the U.S. and its territories and possessions.
Included in the State and County Demographic Reports are several important pieces of information that will be of interest to new dentists or dentists looking to relocate:
- number of professionally active and private practice dentists in the county and state;
- age, gender and specialty of private practitioners in the county and state;
- change in the county and state population since 1991;
- 1990 U.S. Census figures and 2006 estimates for age, income, and race of persons in the county and state including projections to 2011 for age and income; and
- education and occupation of persons in the county and state.
Please note that these reports are produced on a per-county basis; one report equals one county.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice – Employment of Dental Practice Personnel (July 2008)
Chairside assistants earned an average of $16.60 per hour in 2005 according to this report. In addition, the average hourly salary of full-time chairside assistants was $16.40 in 2005, while part-time chairside assistants made $17.00 per hour. The report includes salary information on chairside assistants and dental hygienists, including data on time spent in the practice, average length of employment and other statistics for these dental team members. For other dental staff, the report provides data on the number of full- and part-time staff employed (including five-year trend information).

2007 Survey of Current Issues in Dentistry – Surgical Dental Implants, Amalgam Restorations, and Sedation (June 2008)
The first of four reports from the 2007 Survey of Current Issues in Dentistry is now available, covering three important topics: surgical implants, amalgam restorations, and sedation. When dentists were asked whether they have ever surgically placed a dental implant, 15.9% indicated so in 2006, compared to 11.0% of dentists in 1999. Among dentists who use amalgam restorations, 51.2% reported that the number of patients on whom they used these restorations has decreased in the past twelve months. Nearly two in five dentists (38.2%) reported that they personally use sedation on their patients.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice - Characteristics of Dentists in Private Practice and Their Patients (June 2008)
The percentage of female owner dentists in private practice continues to increase, according to this newly published report, growing from 9.4% in 2001 to 12.9% in 2005. This informative report also includes statistics on subjects ranging from a dentist’s average number of patient visits per week to the percentage of his or her patients covered by private insurance. In addition, the 2006 edition of this publication includes data on dentists’ submission of claims electronically; provision of charitable care; and reimbursement received from dental insurance carriers for four common procedures.

2006–07 Survey of Dental Education: Volume 5 – Finances (June 2008)
Volume 5 of the 2006–07 Survey of Dental Education report series has just been published. Published annually, this report details the revenue and expenses for the operations of 56 United States dental schools during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006. To ensure confidentiality, randomly generated school codes are used in place of school names in all tables that provide financial data.
As illustrated in the report, total revenue per full-time enrollment (FTE) decreased from $102,852 in Fiscal Year Ending (FYE) 2005 to $102,146 in FYE 2006. Total expenditures per FTE, meanwhile, increased slightly between FYE 2005 and FYE 2006, from $96,671 to $96,714.

The average net income from the primary private practice of owner pediatric dentists was $314,400 in 2005, according to this newly-published report. The publication also shows that the average gross billings per owner for all independent pediatric dentists was $979,060 in 2005.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice – Annual Expenses of Operating a Private Practice
(May 2008)
Dentists spend an average of 21.4% of their gross billings on salaries and wages for non-dentist employees according to a new report published by the ADA Survey Center. The 2006 Survey of Dental Practice report Annual Expenses of Operating a Private Practice includes percentage expenses for 25 individual expense categories, including dental supplies, shareholder dentists’ salaries, lab charges, and rent.
This report also includes the average annual dollar amount of expenses for each of these 25 categories. In addition to averages, the report also provides 1st quartile, median and 3rd quartile statistics. The information is presented by type of owner: all independent, solo, and independent nonsolo, and by type of dentist: all, general practitioners, and specialists.

2006–07 Survey of Dental Education: Volume 2 – Tuition, Admission, and Attrition (April 2008)
Volume 2 of the 2006–07 Survey of Dental Education report series is now available. This report, published annually, includes statistical information on annual resident and non-resident tuition, general fees and other fixed costs. It also provides information on admissions policies of dental schools in U.S. and Canada; the number of applicants; academic qualifications of first-year students; criteria employed in the admissions process; advanced placement and number of international dental school graduates; distribution of first-year students according to citizenship; and information on students withdrawing from dental school.
As illustrated in the report, trends in total costs for all four years of dental school show a consistent yearly increase for both residents and non-residents. Over the last ten years, costs for residents among all United States dental schools increased by 80.4%, from $72,195 to $130,236. During the same period, non-resident costs have increased by 68.5%, from $106,421 in 1997-98 to $179,344 in 2006–07. Proportionally, the difference between resident and non-resident tuition and fees has decreased during the past decade; non-resident students paid 47.4% more than residents in 1997–98, and 37.7% more than residents in 2006-07.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice – Orthodontists and Dentofacial Orthopedists in Private Practice (April 2008)
For all owner orthodontists and dentofacial orthopedists, the average practice expenses as a percentage of gross billings decreased from 58.1% in 1998 to 56.9% in 2005, according to this report. The publication also shows that gross billings per practice hour for all solo orthodontists and dentofacial orthopedists increased 138.9% from $222.70 in 1992 to $532.10 in 2005.

2006 Survey of Dental Practice-Income from the Private Practice of Dentistry (April 2008)
Incomes of owner general practitioners increased 6.7% from 2004 to 2005 according to this report. “Income from the Private Practice of Dentistry,” the first report published from the ADA’s 2006 Survey of Dental Practice, shows that in 2005 GPs earned an average net income of $198,350 while specialists’ average net income was $304,020 in that year. From 2001 to 2005, general practitioners net incomes have increased 13.0% while specialists’ incomes have grown by 10.4% during that same time period.
In addition to net income figures, the report includes data on dentists’ expenses, gross billings and sources of gross billings. Five-year trend charts are included for many of these statistics.

2006–07 Survey of Dental Education: Volume 1 – Academic Programs, Enrollment and Graduates (March 2008)
Volume 1 of the 2006–07 Survey of Dental Education report series is now available. This report, published annually, provides statistical information on academic programs, admission requirements, enrollment and graduate levels, tuition costs, and faculty at United States dental schools. Selected information is included for Canadian dental schools as well. The publication also features trends in applications, first-year and total predoctoral enrollment, attrition rates, number of graduates, female student enrollment and first-year tuition and fees.
As illustrated in the report, the overall number of US dental school graduates increased 14.9% between 1997 and 2006 (from 3,930 to 4,515). The number of male graduates increased by 0.4%, from 2,480 to 2,489 in 2006, while the number of female graduates rose 39.7%, from 1,450 to 2,026.

2006–07 Survey of Dental Education: Volume 4 – Curriculum (March 2008)
Volume 4 of the 2006–07 Survey of Dental Education report series has been published by the Survey Center. This report, produced biennially and revised from previous editions, summarizes clock hours of instruction in basic science, clinical science, and behavioral science in United States dental schools by type of instruction and by subject.
Dental schools reported that during the entire predoctoral program in 2006–07, an average of 76.3% (3,742.6 clock hours) of all instruction time was devoted to dental/clinical sciences, 17.5% (859.1 clock hours) to biomedical sciences, and 6.2% (306.1 clock hours) to behavioral, social, information, and research sciences.

2006–07 Survey of Allied Dental Education (February 2008)
The 2006–07 Survey of Allied Dental Education report is available now. This report, published annually by the Survey Center, contains aggregate and program-level information on admissions policies, enrollment, graduates, faculty characteristics, and areas of instruction. The 2006–07 edition includes information on 286 dental hygiene, 268 dental assisting, and 20 dental laboratory technology education programs in the United States.
The report shows that total enrollment in all three types of allied dental education programs increased between 2005–06 and 2006–07. Dental hygiene enrollment increased by 5.6%, from 14,012 to 14,795. Dental assisting enrollment increased 1.4%, from 8,460 to 8,578, while dental laboratory technology enrollment rose 4.4%, from 652 to 681.

Consumer Price Index for Dental Services, 1970–2007 (February 2008)
The most recent update to Consumer Price Index for Dental Services has just been published by the Survey Center. A compilation of consumer price index figures calculated by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the report reveals that dental services continued their accelerated growth of prices relative to goods and services as a whole. For example, during 2007, prices for Dental Services increased 5.1%, compared to 2.8% for All Items.

2006–07 Survey of Advanced Dental Education (January 2008)
This annual publication provides information on advanced dental specialty and general dentistry education programs in the United States accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The report features demographic data on residents, enrollment and graduate levels, application deadlines, and tuition and stipends at the individual program and aggregate levels. In the 2006–07 academic year, 708 accredited advanced dental education programs enrolled 2,881 first-year students/residents (5,617 students/residents overall), and reported 2,862 graduates in the most recent graduating class.
